It was fine and there would be a lot of good discussion points in a classroom , but it bored me a bit. She is supposed to spend the summer in Rockaway with her friend Margret and her father is supposed to visit every weekend, but her father must go overseas, and Margret’s family moves so that her father can find work. When Lily's father leaves to go overseas, things change for her and the uncertainty of war hits home. Our audiences are absolutely rapt. She lies, sneaks in to moives, likes to accuse people of being Nazi (which can be dangerous), she is an indifferent student (except for books), eats candy with her friend that was suppose go to a soilder, and doesn't want to pratice the piano.

Sometimes the plot moved a little slowly, but it really picked up towards the end and ended beautifully and emotionally. She just struck me as a very spoiled girl who wasn't used to not having her way. Lily lives in St. Albans, Queens, with her father and her grandmother. I debated the rating on this quite a bit. She is a bit of a brat, but I like the way the author opens her up and makes it so that she can be understood, even in her naughty ways. Finally, based on a comparison with other books I've recently rated a 2, I had to go with 1 star because this one was just so much worse. The author remarksI like WWII stories. Lily promises him that she will go with him to France to help find his sister.
