Get Up, Stand Up is as much an anthem of protest and social justice as it is an anthem of Rastafarian belief and Rastafarian militancy in favor of their beliefs, their right to believe, and the larger goal of social justice, while Bob Marley's original version of I Shot the Sheriff (which is much rawer and more urgent than Eric Clapton's almost anthemic hit version, you can almost hear the pain Marley feels for engaging in his actions, while Clapton didn't seem to notice what he did) is as much a song about police harassment, systemic racism, and poverty as it is about the criminalization of Rastafari beliefs (the seed Sheriff John Brown wants killed is likely Marijuana, which is central to Rasta beliefs) and the desperation the people go to that they'd rather not get involved with, like a killing a police officer who was threatening and harassing them. Burnin' is bit rougher, rawer, and funkier than Catch a Fire, it's more aggressive, more militant, and more political and also, a lot more religious. Bob's second album isn't quite his best (I still think Catch a Fire wins out because it's just a bit more diverse than this one), but it's really close, and probably my second-favorite Bob Marley album. The problem with it is that a bunch of the songs near the end, while still fantastic, sound slightly samey. While not everyone may care for the often overt religious material, one thing that everyone can agree on is the quality of music, not a single track is bad.A really fun, relaxing, cool, thought out album, that I found so much to love and admire.
