David Rudyard Williams (born 1954 in Aruba) is the Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, as well as a Professor of African and African American Studies and of Sociology at Harvard University. Prior to rejoining Children’s in December 2007, he was at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) where he was founding director of the Division of Experimental Hematology, attending physician in Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Pediatrics, and associate chair for Translational Research. He has also received distinguished contribution awards from the American Sociological Association, the American Psychological Association and the New York Academy of Medicine. Several trainees are now in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. Williams has also investigated how coping resources and strategies ranging from social support and religiosity to psychological attributes and health behaviors can modify the effects of stress on health.
Williams has multiple patents, several of which have been licensed to pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms.
Williams originally trained in hematology/oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Williams is has recently served on the Joint Oversight Committee of the Translational Research Training in Hematology program of the American Society of Hematology/European Hematology Association.
