This one was very good. It is an interesting book that I'm sure you'll enjoy. Disobedience, the debut by 31-year-old Naomi Alderman, and in places a deft and intelligent work, is one such book. It's too bad. One issue other reviewers have is that the narrator Henry is annoying, but perhaps that's what I most enjoyed. This book just made so much sense. The facade of Writerliness -- supposedly of the narrator, not the novel's author -- was far too irritating and got in the way of any sparks the novel coI really liked the narrator's younger sister, who's an obsessive cross-dressing historical re-enactor. As I read this novel, I felt a tingle going through me each time the word 'Hendon' flashed at my eyes. Those secrets seem to be another theme of the book. Set in an Orthodox Jewish community in England where strict adherence to Orthodox ways are the price of admission to be part of the community. It was ok, but I kept wanting to be done reading it, and not in a good way. Not that a kid wouldn't be. At first, I was immediately drawn in by the splendid writing, which had a lyrical quality to it, but even that grew stale as the book went on, becoming not delightful but pretentious and annoying. The 17 year old male narrator's coming of age at the same time he discovers his mother's affair was the main angle, but there were so many other stories within this family of four that I was completely fascinated to observe how one family member's story connected with all the others. Her prose is beautiful, and her subject matter interesting. BeautifMagnificent and thoughtful and complicated—-just like growing up jewish and not entirely straight. And sighing. Lots of questions about family and how we feel about them (particularly a son's love for his mother), are touched on. It could be the work of a ghost, this electronic eavesdropping.This book grated against my skin, but I wouldn't say it was a bad book, and the secondary character- a die hard 11 year old civil war re-enactor who also happened to be a girl- was fascinating and I loved her.

That said, I often felt sad reading this book, especially the introductory paragraphs to each chapter which described Jewish observances and rituals. Several felt that the book was repetitive and boring, I don't agree. This is an interesting book that takes a look at infidelity from a teenage son's perspective. Published The boy discovers his mother is cheating early on and tells the story of the year of the affair. He and his family have just moved from rural Vermont to Chicago, where is father is a teacher and his mother is pursuing a career as a musician. Expected a love story, but got way much more. I skimmed the last third of the book and yes, it spun out exactly as I could have predicted. At first I thought it was because it's been a while since I read something literary, I tend to like more populist novels. Books about religion and the struggle with it are of particular interest to me, since it's a subject in my own writing. She and her lover correspond frequently.Most of the book is about how Henry deals with this knowledge. I liked the quirkiness of the characters (Civil War reenactments, musicians that play music most people have never heard). I have enjoyed some Jane Hamilton books more than others. Esti too with her deep despair and even deeper hope wading through life was compelling and heartbreaking. Well written. But I think the main issue I had was that I expected something from this book that I didn't get. Also, he seemed a little TOO concerned with his mom and her affair. Universities have them, adult education organisations have them, country retreats have them, seaside resorts have them, private individuals organise their own – ‘creative writing’ courses.Until not so many decades ago they hardly existed, yet the literary world went merrily round without them. It was very interesting to read about orthodox rituals and some beliefs, as I am very interested in all kinds of radical religions and cults. An interesting idea for a book about the Shaw family with 17 year-old Henry as the narrator who reads his mother's e-mails and discovers that she's having an affair. Not thHo hum. It's mainly about other aspects I think saying it was barely a lesbian story is harsh, it is a story about women who have had a lesbian relationship. I've never read any other story set in this place.
