Police overreacted when they arrested and charged three people after three statues were defaced with pink paint in Toronto during a morning protest, says Black Lives Matter.BLM spokesperson Rodney Diverlus, a Ryerson University undergrad, said during a past orientation week when he was studying engineering, students were encouraged to find city statues, among other things, and deface them with stickers.“Not arrested, not held for 17 hours, not put into a criminal justice,” said Diverlus, one of several speakers during a press conference on Sunday morning in front of a defaced statue of Egerton Ryerson on Ryerson University campus.“All the pomp and circumstance we saw (Saturday) from all the police, all the theatrics, was about pink paint. She wants all the charges dropped.“This is absolutely irregular and I think it’s a waste of taxpayer’s dollars and an affront to the community,” said Gebresellassi, who said she was allowed only two phone conversations with her clients between 3:30 p.m and midnight on Saturday.Charged with three counts of mischief under $5,000 and conspiracy to commit a summary offence are Daniel Gooch, 35, Danielle Smith, 47, and Jenna Reid, 35 — all from Toronto.The three were released after spending 17 hours in custody at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.
