land acknowledgement ottawa

These territories, comprising the Kichi Sibi (Ottawa River) watershed, and including all of Canada’s national capital region, were never surrendered or ceded by the Algonquin nation. This is a reality inherent in the Indigenous legal system of the Algonquin nation, but it is also recognized in Canadian common law, as laid out in the Royal Proclamation of 1763, and the Constitution Act of 1982. A Land Acknowledgement or Land Recognition is a formal statement, often given orally at the beginning of organized events, celebrations, or activities. While most of these campuses are included, the list will gradually become more complete as we learn more about specific traditional territories. It recognizes, respects, and affirms that there is an irreducible and ongoing relationship between Indigenous people and the Land.

The Canada Council for the Arts acknowledges that our offices, located in Ottawa, are on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial. The Council recognizes the Algonquins as the customary keepers and defenders of the Ottawa River Watershed and its tributaries. The Council has and will continue to honour the commitments to self-determination and sovereignty we have made to Indigenous Nations and Peoples. The Council acknowledges the historical oppression of lands, cultures and the original Peoples in what we now know as Canada and fervently believes the Arts contribute to the healing and decolonizing journey we all share together. This land acknowledgement was developed by members of the Algonquin community and we thank them for their generosity and collaboration.Virtually unchanged for thousands of years, now used and enjoyed by generations of Canadians, the canoe is an enduring symbol of Indigenous presence, cultural continuity and our shared future on this land.Algonquin canoes such as the one displayed here are made of birch bark and sewed with spruce roots. I (we) would also like to recognize the Inuit of Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut and the Innu of Nitassinan, and their ancestors, as the original people of Labrador. We would very much appreciate suggested edits. The AWC partners are very proud of the work accomplished together since the beginning of the relationship. Members have requested supports on creating a traditional land acknowledgement statement for their municipal government.
