French director Alexandre Aja exploded onto the horror scene in 2003 with excellent horror flick Switchblade Romance, but since then he's disappointingly veered off into remake territory. Additionally, Kiefer Sutherland proves wit and emotional depth in playing the lead role of Ben Carson; no doubt that he is more than "Jack Bauer" and also able to carry the story over its weaker parts.
The use of gore, special effects and injury makeup is so much that many of the supernatural characters and injuries are grotesque. As is often the case, it does lose a little of the subtle and peculiarly sinister tone so commonly found in Far Eastern horror (How do they do it?). UK theatrical version was cut by distributor Fox to secure a more commercial '15' rating. No police, no panic from neighbors etc. Expect to jump more than a few times while watching this. The plot focuses on Ben Carson; and ex-cop and ex-alcoholic who has been forced to take a night watchman's job in order to get his life back on track for the good of his children. Alexandre Aja (screenplay), Takes suspension of belief to new levels and contains some of the worst dialogue ever.How Sutherland got himself into this nonsense is beyond me, and the whole film takes itself so seriously.The trumpeted gore effects are good but few and far between and ultimately pointless.Watch only if you're easily pleased or have nothing better to do. The mirror contains a dark force that has a powerful effect upon anyone who gets too close, introducing a new wrinkle to a classic trope, as reflected in our gallery of great horror-movie mirrors. Mr. Sutherland is fantastic as always however a few actors are a bit flat .

I'm not a big fan of "the Kiefster" as a rule, having enjoyed only a handful of his films ("Freeway" , "Flatliners"), but he's pretty good here as the generic recovering ex-alcoholic who's suspended from the police force and who's been forced to take a security job guarding a premises where a fire took place.His descent into semi-madness whilst battling evil spectral forces is well realised in my opinion.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 28, 2014 There are scenes in this film that are genuinely terrifying,and which are sprung on the audience without warning. In the beginning of the movie, it was clearly stated that the burned-out store had no electricity.
